NEED water ballast bags
« on: 27 September 2009, 18:28 »
Boys,

Anybody got one or two bags I can buy from them?  Or know how I can make one?

By the way, I flew my asw-15B recently against a couple of discus type gliders.  This thing hangs on for a while at 85 knots with a discus.  And will out-thermal the heck out of one.

Scott

PS....did I mention I need ballast bags?

Hi Scott,

Good meeting you at New Castle last month. the old girl was looking good!

Most of the ASW-15s and -17s imported in the early '70s came in without bags and were fitted with Smiley Bags which Jim Smiley (AH) had made by an airline survival equipment service company (life jackets, rafts and the like.)

I dealt with them about 15 years ago when I was restoring my ASW-17, and if I remember correctly, they were located near Raleigh NC. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the company and all the documentation went with the '-17 when I sold it.

Check with John Murray at Eastern Sailplane. At one time, I think he had a source for Smiley Bags but I don't know if he still does.

See you next year at New Castle Intl, if not before.

Hey Tom!

I sold my 15 and bought a Cirrus which fits me much better.  It was pretty much a trade.  But thanks to your advice, along with Roy & Karl at dinner.  This trade was just what I needed.

The 15 went to a pilot in the Nashville, TN club.

Hi there,
if still necesssary or of interest for others:
during my visit at Schleichers in October, I had a little chat about watersacks for the "15"... friendly Mr Münch there mentioned, that they take help from another german company called "Streifeneder" to get watersacks especially for their older planes...

happy landings,
jannicam
