should there be much side to side play in the horizontal stabilizer (elevator) say as much as 3 or 4 mm?

Ya know, I was thinking the same thing.  Mine has some side to side play as well.

I don't know if anything is written about this issue.  I had mine up to 100 kts this past tuesday.  No problem.

The standard cirrus does have specific measurements of how much side to side play you can have.  That might be a good reference since both are full flying elevators.

I had as well problems with my elevator. The right bearing had a little vertical play due to a screw that had become slightly loose. At that time I asked Schleicher and I received an answer from Gregor Heller. Allowed is:

"Horizontales-, vertikales Spiel am Randbogen gemessen kleiner als 10mm. Spiel ist die Bewegung zwischen Klack-Klack-Geräuschen."
Translation:
"Horizontal-, vertical play measured less than 10mm at the tip. Play is defined as the movement between click-clack-sound."

Well, I have not had that click-clack sound. My elevator just stayed in the position where it was moved to due to the remaining friction of the screw but in case that bolts and bushes are worn out you will probably hear it.
Hope that answer helps you to get calm again B)
