HELP! Need balance information for control surfac
« on: 02 January 2009, 10:31 »
You all are my ONLY hope for doing this accurately.

I need to refinish my control surfaces and especially the rudder.  Does anyone hear have the inch/pound cg information for each control surface?  Or a direct phone number to the factory in Germany?

If so, email me, or call my cell phone 901-270-6099.

I can tell you how to figure it out on yours to see if ours match up.   That way I can repaint mine.  And also, make sure that neither of us, will have a flutter issue in the future.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

In europe refinishing must be done under supervision of a certified glider technician. This technician should be able to help you.

The key in your problem is to weight the controls and stuff before you do some work on them. This way you should be safe.

I am very curious for the result; please post some pictures.

hi, if i remeber correctly there is no specified balance or weight limits for the rudder. When I refinished my rudder, the moment measured at the furthest distance from the hinge line was 343grams before stripdown, and only 250grams after repainting. Unfortunately i didnt get an oportunity to measure the moment without any paint on the original gell, but i only used 4 very thin layers of acrylic (1primer 3 top) with each layer being rubbed down a little between coats. I would also be interested to hear what the moment is like on your rudder

Ok....here goes!  I will do this over the next 7 days and take lots of pictures.

When you took the balance information from your rudder....what was your procedure?

And....

Did you weigh at the furthestmost tip on the trailing edge of the rudder?

Thanks!

I measured my weight at the furthestmost tip on the trailing edge of the rudder.  It came out to be 408 grams.  I stripped the paint, primed, sprayed acrylic on 3 coats.  Then rebalanced it to exactly that weight again.  I test flew it tuesday.  It flew great.  Had the airspeed up to 100 knots.  Very smooth, no problems.

How can I add pictures of my work on here?  I would like to do so.
