Re-finishing
« on: 20 July 2005, 06:11 »
Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience of re-finishing an ASW-15 either in gelcoat or acrylic? Any recommendations for companies or organisations who could do this?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

I had my 15-B totally refurbished last year, as well in as out.
The job was done by SZD in Poland.
The quality of the works is superb, so that at least 5 members of
our gliding-club had their ship done in Poland by SZD as well.

Refinishing in acryll cost a little more cause of the price of the
laquer, and the glider must be put in primer first.

You can contact Mrs. Chmiel at www.szdjezow.com.pl
The patron  is Mr. Henryck Minarski and his e-mail address is
hmynarski@szdjezow.com.pl

Success,

André

We have chosen to do our overhaul with Novak Glider Service, Slovenia (http://www.gliderservice-novak.si/html/e/glavna/glavna_e.htm). We did not choose SZD because after they did a overhaul with a sistership at our club there was a (big) weight problem and the paint job could be better. This was some years ago.

Novak at the contrary is an excellent company with good service. And what I like most; they think before they do. An example: at the inspection they found a bend steering rod. They got a new one made at DG (Elan) nextdoor of them. Everybody is saying to me the she is more beautiful now than the day she came out of the factory.

Hi Steve,  I jsut finished refinishing my 15.  It took me about 700 hours and 1500.00 in materials.  I had a guru to help walk me thru it.  An AS rep in the US, Dave Nelson.  Mine had bad crazing issues in the origional gel so I ground the gel off to the glass.  To do this properly without injuring the glass is truely a challange.  I used Prestec, Simtec polyester paint for my new finish.  It takes a lot of wet sanding and buffing but my 15 looks new.  Simtec comes highly recommended in the gliding community and seems to be the polyester of choise.  There are two major schools for repaint.  Polyester  or  Polyurothane.  Polyester is what is origionaly on there as gelcoat.  It is easyer to shoot, blend and repair.  It chips more easily and probably doesnt last as long.  I chose it for the ease of repair and blending and cost.  Urothane or polyurothatne is harder to shoot, requires a really nice environment to shoot and cure, is harder and arguably lasts longer.
1. you must remove any crazed or cracked Gel (it will just crack the new paint if you don't)
2. properly repair anything people have painted over
3. Be very careful not to screw up W&B  and mass balance control serfaces

redoing mine was a labor of love and will never recoup, Had it been a car it would have been 15,000.00 of work and materials.  The upside is it presents just fine amongst LS8's and Lak 17's (still
climbs with them too)

Thanks for all the input guys. I now have a number of options and quotations ranging from lots of labour time by us and low cost, to high cost but low labour time by us.
I have to discuss and agree with my partners which way to go forward, but I appreciate everyone's help.
Steve.

Hi andre,

in the meantime I was in Jelena Gora with my glider.
But I have not so good experience.
After they saw it they wanted 50% more than prior offered.
becase of the cracks in the paint some glass has to be added.
That was not new for me. But they told that is not calculated.

1. When I have a glider in a condition with no cracks I need no new paint.
2. When I offer painting I have to calculate new glass and all works.
3. The offer was: when repair is to be done additional cost is to pay.
In my eyes: glass because cracks is part of refinishing. No repair.
Rapair is when work is to be done because of definite broken things.
e.g. gear doors, loose bearings, delamination or loose ro ends.

I was a little bit disappointed, after I said in that case I won´t let it do
the offer changed to +25% but I already made my decision.
I took it again in my treiler and went off.
I gave it now to an other shop which made a definite offer.
No hidden charges.

My tip:
Before making a deal sent them photos and let make a ixed price.

Best Regards,

Joshy

Hi Joshy,

I was surprised with your expierience, because in our club 5 pilots
(myself included) had their ship refubished in Jelenia Gora.
All five had a fixed price confirmed on e-mail, with the service of
little repairs as for instance -wheeldoors, included.
Ofcourse a description of the works was agreed in our communication,
but they had not seen one of our gliders.

All five of us were pleased with the works done, at the price we agreed.

I cannot say more,

André
