Rusted hinge brackets
« on: 15 April 2004, 20:23 »
Restoration well under way on my recently purchased ASW-15B. After removing all flight surfaces we found considerable rust on metal brackets on rudder an hard to see portions of elevator bellcrank. It appeared the flight surfaces had not been off in a long time. Owners may want to take a close look next inspection by removing rudder, comes off easily.Bearing surfaces were pretty dry.

Also bushings and bearings in gear retract hinges were dirty and dry.

Indeed, it's very important to check and oil your asw15 bearings and joints on a yearly basis. Besides the note from O-1Driver, it is very important to lubricate the bearings of the brakes in the wing. If they get worn out; that is a nasty repair to replace those bearings. In that case there have to be cut two holes in both wings...

Also check the control brackets behind your seat. They tend to loosen up. Saw this problem in a ASW 19 also.
