Radio Antenna
« on: 03 March 2005, 02:46 »
Hello gliding enthusists,
So I just got me a new radio (microAir 760)... Good news  :)

I found my coax in my ASW15B cut off for some reason... Then I ohmed it out and found it to be a dead short for the most part... Bad News

So now I'm looking for an antenna to use and would like everyones advice on what to use and where to mount it. I worry about blocking transmition if its in the nose and I'm not sure I want the RF radiating in my head. Since this is a sailplane, there isnt a good ground plane for which to set up a standard antenna. The other option has an antenna that points down 180 degrees from the normal antenna... this eliminates the need for a ground plane i gather.

I would love to hear from anyone that has had to fit there glider with another antenna, what they used, experiances and what not to do. I appreciate all and any info that I can get.

Thxs,
Korey

PS Dust boy (Gil), how is yours set up? Greg seems to think you just have a coax with no antenna... that dont make sense.

Hi Korey, I might have been impared when I first looked at my antennae, and Greg well...
but after further inspection I believe the factory one comes aft as a coax then somewhere in the fuse I couldn't see(maybe by the static ports), the outer shield is stripped off and the core continues aft and up into the vert fin where I have no idea what happens.  Wet sanding stabs tonight.

Hi Korey,

You said:

To test the antenna properly, you need an RF power meter, that can measure Forward and Reflected power. An ohm meter can show a "dead short" for a perfectly good antenna.

If your radio RF output power is 5 watts, the RF power meter will show 5 W forward power and up to 0.5 W of reflected power. The lower the value of the reflected power, the better.

When the coax cable is shorted or open, the reflected power will be almost the same as forward power.

Talk to a local ham radio operator, he should be able to help you with testing the antenna. A radio shop at a nearby airport can also help (for a fee :)).

The antenna itself is usually installed in the fin and it's made out of a coax cable. The "short" that you are detecting, might be the resistance of the matching circuit (a coil).

Good luck,
