Motor ASW-15 !
« on: 15 April 2004, 13:53 »
Hi there.

I have been looking for a motor glider for some time and have been offered a ASW15BM with Hihrt O-27/35PS motor.

I did not know earlier that there had been manufactured ASW15's with motor but evidently there were 5 built and 3 of them are likely airworthy today.

I was intending to buy a Scheibe SF-27M if I found one in good condition since I am very familiar with Iron/Wood construction and maintainance but I am tempted to consider seriously this ASW-15BM.

I am a bit put off by the fact that only 5 were built, is that because of problems with the glider or were there newer types that replaced it ?

Does anyone here have any recomandations or war-stories about the motor ASW-15 ?

There is one 15B build by Schleicher with a 30hp KM27 rotary engine. It's the one with number 15440 (became 15001M) and registration number D-KIWB. Also there is the 15207 D-KGHE with an engine. I think the motorizing project was a little experiment by Schleicher.

Eventhough I very curious about your possible plane to be  Do you have some more information about it?

a while ago a club member of mine had one but flew it only seldom (he also has an LS-3, a Pitts S2B and a MCR 01).
I´ve never flown it myself so I can only write what he said, but apparently it suffered from very high wing loading (they had to cut off some 30cm off each wing because of structural integrity reasons). He also had problems with the engine (unreliable start, low power output etc.), which made some very "interesting" take offs (we fly from a 480m asphalt strip (600m msl))

As far as I know Walter Binder modified these ASW-15 himself, that´s why there where only 5 built.

Bye,
Markus
