landing gear dropping
« on: 20 September 2010, 15:32 »
Hi all, my landing gear is not staying up securely.  It tends to drop with any G forces.  I have just begun to look into the issue, but would appreciate any guidance anyone may have.

Thanks

Doesn't seem to be much activity here.  I am not familiar with the gear mechanism for a 15.  Can someone tell us if it has a torque tube with lever that operates and supports the weight of the gear when retracted?

First of all you should check your landing gear for bent tubes due to a hard landing in the past. Next, check the springs that helps the gear to over center.

If the all above is fine, there is a bolt in the landing gear to adjust it.

Please let me know if run into troubles

Johan -
Thanks, I will be looking at it Saturday, and will report back.  I'm also wondering if there's a notch for the gear to catch in; maybe that is the bolt you refer to.

My landing gear lever has a button on the top that releases a spring loaded locking peg which locates in a notch at each end of the lever movement that peg must be located when gear is up or down  ;)

I just started flying my 15 this past weekend.  I discovered that it is when I jostle the rod going aft from the landing gear handle with my left shoulder that it can come loose.  Doesn't always, but once I made it happen that way. It locks firmly in place in the down position.

Paul, I couldn't find where the spring-loading mechanism peg comes down to secure the handle this weekend; maybe next.

I am totally smitten with my new bird.  I just got my rating the weekend before, and flew both days this weekend.  I trained in an ASK 21, and the 15 handles like the sport version of the 21.  Thermaling with the trim all the way back at 40+ mph was like floating.

We have another six or eight weeks of good soaring here in Tennessee.  I am psyched!

Elliott-
Do you know if your glider been modified? There are some good photos of the original controls on this site and on the Schleicher website.

A good photo that shows the gear handle is:

www.alexander-schleicher.de/galerie/typen_galerie/15_003.jpg

You can see the silver button sticking out of the top of the gear handle, the pins where the handle goes into the slot, and the notches in the slot at both ends of the gear handle movement.

To answer JG's question- the gear operates by pushrods.

Hi Rob -

Yes, that's what my gear looks like.  I am thinking I should get a file and file the notch a little deeper.

thanks

Are you sure? Unless your ship has made thousends of starts and landings, I can hardly imagine that this is the problem. I would go for less invasive actions at first.

I recommend to clean and lubricate the locking mechanism in the gear handle. Next we polish and lubricate the rod where the gear handle is welded to. This rod is made of bare metal and could be rough due to some corrosion.

I will try those solutions first.  It is the original gear.

Elliott-
First, I would check what someone else mentioned- the linkage.
One place you can adjust the length of the pushrod is  right where it comes out of the handle housing; back off the jam nut and screw the rod end in or out.

There are probably other joints in the mechanism that are adjustable- you want that solid ka-thunk sound & feeling when it goes over center.
Does anyone have a diagram or detailed photos of the landing gear system?

Thanks, I will look for adjustment screws.  We'll have to fly together sometime, BTW, as I am based at Eagleville.

I noticed. You can count on it- I've gotten off to a slow start- I've had the Beast a year and only have six flights and a cool scar to show for it-
... and now it's out of annual.

We've been having some spectacular days- cloudbase at 7000 feet and above ( 2100 meters), nicely shaped cu in well-ordered streets as far as you can see. ... of course, that's usually when I'm towing, grounded for some reason, or on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and I get to look at it out the window at work!
